Illuminate the Winter Darkness on our Winter Lit Wassail

Lantern Making for a Winter Lit Wassail

We are hosting a beautiful Orchard Wassail and Lantern Parade funded by Arts Council England this coming January on the Food Union Allotment site at Sherbourne Valley Allotments.

Come along to one of our free lantern making workshops prior to the wassail and make your very own unique lantern to light up the dark nights.

The Lantern making workshops will be

  • Friday 13 Dec 2024 | 10am-2pm | Coventry Cathedral
  • Friday 3rd January | 10am-2pm | Sherbourne Valley Allotments
  • Friday 10th January | 10am-2pm | The Pod Cafe
  • Sunday 12th January | 10am-2pm | Sherbourne Valley Allotments

These activities are tricky for small hands and a parent or guardian is required. A great team activity!

The Orchard Wassail is a fantastic tradition dating back centuries. The aim of the wassail is to ensure a good harvest by inviting good spirits and scaring away the ones that might wreak havoc - and how do we do that I hear you ask?! Well…with a lot of noise making of course!

On our wassail we will follow the Giant Wassail Queen and her King on a procession with our lit lanterns and a band of merry musicians around the allotment site and make a right good racket - feel free to bring pots and pans to bang, bells to ring, or just use your voice to awaken the faeries and scare away the tricksy pixies!

The wassail will commence at 3.30pm on Sunday 19th January 2024.

There will be hot food and drink served for a small cash fee, a beautiful bonfire and much merriment.

We would love to see you at one or more of our free lantern making sessions and/or at our wassail.
